Personalized Yoga at Triune

WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga is the combined practice of postures, breathing and meditation. YOGA IS MEDICALLY PROVEN TO: reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve depression and anxiety.

The Yoga postures, or Asanas, exercise every part of the body, stretching and toning muscles, joints, spine, and the entire skeletal system. Regular participation in Yoga will help to: burn calories; improve posture; improve overall physical fitness; improve skin; enhance mental clarity; improve concentration; lead to greater self-understanding and acceptance; increase well-being; and lead to a more flexible and tolerant attitude.

Yoga promotes relaxation by releasing physical and mental tension, liberating vast resources of energy. The yogic breathing exercises, known as Pranayana, revitalize the body, calm the mind, soothe the soul, and leave you feeling refreshed. Yoga brings the body, mind and soul together in harmony; it opens your heart to the stillness and beauty underneath.

Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga

Through the regular practice of Yoga you will increase your physical energy, flexibility & strength. These ancient yogic techniques naturally empower you to "heal your own body, mind & spirit." You will feel more decisive, creative and motivated in your daily life.

Learning to control body movements, breath, body functions, and the student gradually becomes more in charge of their physical being. During this process, the mind is trained to observe sensations, emotions, energy movement, leading to an inner awareness of how the mind functions. From that awareness the mental training becomes more refined and explicit in its methods of using this powerful tool for healing, and creating life as it should be.

Ashtanga

This ancient practice consists of an energetic sequence of postures that flow together and produce heat to detoxify the body. Poses can be easily modified, and injuries and limitations accommodated. Ashtanga incorporates the use of ujjayi breathing, "the victorious breath," to build heat, strengthen the lungs, and steady the mind. Physical strength and flexibility are the benefits, not the requirements, of learning ashtanga! At the introductory level, the series will be taught incrementally and many modifications will be offered.

Hatha

Whereas ashtanga involves ujjayi breath and a sequence of postures, hatha yoga is an umbrella category that is not limited to a specific sequence or type of breathing. Hatha yoga can be approached at a more gentle, slower pace than ashtanga, but will also improve strength and flexibility. Introductory hatha instruction will focus on correct alignment and incorporate varied breathing practices.

About the Teacher

Lisa Grunberger was first exposed to yoga as a child by her babysitter, an accomplished yogini and professional flutist. Lisa went on to earn her doctorate in Religious Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School. In 2003, she deepened her yoga practice through her Sivananda training in the Bahamas. She is prenatal certified and has taught yoga for children as well.

Consistent with her interests in matters of body and spirit, in her doctoral research she explored the life of Bernarr Macfadden, the Father of Physical Culture in the United States and his naturopathic philosophy. Lisa has taught Comparative Religions and Literature at Hofstra University, Bronx Community College, and SUNY at Old Westbury. She has taught at Parsons The New School for Design and
John Jay College for Criminal Justice. She currently teaches writing, comparative religions and literature at Temple University.

Lisa teaches a vigorous, but gentle Vinyasa yoga class, which challenges students to be fully mindful in each asana. She views yoga as a dance between body, mind and breath that can return us to ourselves each time we come to the mat with an open heart and good intention.
